EES Statuses and Decision scheme
What does the EESimply for carriers?
EES implies changes to carriers’ processes regarding the verification of travel documents. The Entry-Exit system (EES) electronically records electronically the entry and exit data of third-country nationals* (non-Schengen nationals) crossing the external borders of the Schengen Area. Instead of verifying visas physically on passports, carriers must check it through the EES carrier system by getting the EES status. EES status indicates whether the passenger has a valid – single or double entry – visa and is allowed to arrive in the Schengen area.
* travelers who do not hold the nationality of a country in the European Union or the nationality of Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway.
Possible EES responses

N/A – the nationality is not subject to EES checks (eg. EU citizens)
OK-EES (OK to board) – Valid single/double-entry visa found → possible false-positive result – refer to carrier decision scheme

Not-OK-EES (Not OK to Board) – No valid single/double entry visa found → check for other valid travel documents (see page 2 for cases)

Carrier decision scheme

Other valid travel documents
- Holder of multiple entry visas
- Holder of short-stay visa
- Holder of long-stay visa
- Holder of a residence permit (residence card)
- Holder of a Diplomatic passport or laissez-passer
Airport transit → no visa required for passenger in transit if final destination out of Schengen
Special process to apply – Until October 6th
OK EES statuses may be incorrect for passengers holding a visa starting before April 10th (Until all borders are equipped – April 10th – and all visas with manual stamps are expired – October 6th see details here)
⚠️ If the visa has been stamped, carrier should do a physical passport check. Why ?
A stamped visa means that the passenger has crossed a non-EES equipped border point with the visa.
The entry has not been recorded into the EES, the status is not reliable. OPS need to check the number of stamps :
- For single entry visa, one stamp = visa is not valid anymore.
- For double entry visa, 2 stamps = visa is not valid anymore.
After April 10th, the probability of incorrect OK EES decrease drastically as stamping will stop.
