A temporary API requirement within the Schengen area
On August 1, 2026, Italy temporarily introduced internal border controls at its air and sea borders with Spain.
The measure, introduced until September 1, created an unusual situation for airlines operating between two Schengen countries: passenger information had to be transmitted to the Italian authorities for flights from Spain to Italy.
A regulatory change like this puts a strain on operation teams. New requirements need to be identified and understood, operational procedures adapted and, where automation is not available, passenger information submitted manually.
Coming in the middle of the busy summer season, there was little time to adapt.
